Sunday, January 18
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Thomas C. Savage Visitor Center
Fort Snelling State Trail, St Paul, MN 55111
January 21 is Squirrel Appreciation Day -- founded in 2001 by wildlife rehabilitator Christy Hargrove of Asheville, North Carolina, who figured squirrels were running out of food sources about this time of year.
This year, we are starting a new tradition of celebrating our sciurid cousins by surveying dreys (leaf nests) at Ft. Snelling State Park. We will count dreys, identify the trees they are in, and measure their height above the ground. No need to bring your climbing gear or extra-tall step ladder--we'll have some simple equipment on hand to do the job.
We will gather at 9 AM in front of the visitor center. After a short introduction, we will split into smaller groups and head into the field, and then return to the visitor center before wrapping up before 1 PM.
If you need to reach us the day of the outing, please call Jon's cell at 612-388-4700. Note that cell reception can be spotty in the park.
